Every single one of us look forward to the kiwi summer. We drink, we beach, we eat and we party perhaps a little too much. By the end of the holidays our new year resolutions really start to pile up and that need to detox away the guilty pleasures of the summer can reach a critical point.

With all this warm weather and fantastic food over the season you may have noticed some changes in your skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and is continually exposed to external and internal factors such as the environment as well as the food and drink we consume. Constantly working hard all-year round, your skin sometimes needs a break too.

Why Do We Need to Look After Our Skin?

Protection – Both a barrier from the threat of pathogens and physical damage, the skin protects your body and organs from potential harm.

Heat regulation – The skin holds more blood supply than it actually needs to allow it to control and regulate your body temperature.

Vitamin D – Our skin stores lipids and water to synthesize vitamin D. Vitamin D is responsible for the absorption of calcium, iron, zinc, phosphate, magnesium and bone growth. It’s synthesis primarily takes place in your skin. As very few foods contain Vitamin D the role that healthy skin plays in promoting bone growth and decreasing the likeliness of illnesses (such as heart disease, breast cancer and depression) is even more important.

Water resistant – Not just great for hitting the surf, our skin is water-resistant to also keep the healthy nutrients on our bodies from being washed away.

Appearance and communication – Allows us to check our health, mood and attractiveness (both in ourselves and in others). The condition of our skin can also really affect how we feel about our own bodies and our self-esteem.

Our Quick Guide to Detoxing Your Skin:

  • Practice healthy eating and drinking – Drink at least 2 litres of water a day, eat green leafy vegetables and cut out sugar. No matter what products or detox hacks you use, if you don’t work from the inside-out you will find getting the best skin possible will always be out of reach.
  • Dry brush your body – Make a routine for your skin care starting with using a natural, bristled brush in the shower using gentle, circular motions. This will help to release the toxins of the holiday treats and with it any cellulite from too many cheat days away from the gym. Do this daily for at least three months.
  • Cleanse – Cleansing your skin every evening is an easy habit to get into as part of your beauty routine. Avoid any harsh soaps, foaming cleansers, or coarse scrubs. We recommend our Skintruth Rejuvenating Hot Cloth Cleanser with a deep cleansing formula suitable for all skin types. Enriched with Eucalyptus oil this uplifting rejuvenating for your skin post-Xmas and New Years. Alternatively, to wash away the stress – and makeup – of 2016 we also have an OSMO Effects Detoxify Clarifying Cleanser. This is a deep cleanser that removes product build-up and without dehydrating the skin.
  • Detoxing bath – There are a range of different ways to put this bath together and you can find these anywhere on the net or Pinterest. The simplest though is to add a cup of sea salt to a hot bath, 2-3 times a week.
